First off, some more pages of Super Mario Legend are on the way, courtesy of ~cyclos12! Many thanks for the contribution in time of need! I was just writing to him via DA note correspondence, and I had a bit of a revelation regarding the future of the comic and this account.
As of now, there isn't so much a need as a want... on my end... to do more pages of the comic. So, I have a proposal! It's a little bit of a wall-o'-text, so bear with me, if you're interested in seeing more of this comic.
Here's the thing... I got the idea for an epic Super Mario RPG tribute project back in high school. I had all kinds of ideas, lots of plans, lots of big dreams... but didn't have the resources to do any of them, except my strongest suits, drawing and writing. I wanted to take a manga-influenced approach to comics, and in a way that would let me really flex my writing muscles and give the royal treatment to the story, characters, and atmosphere of my favorite video game. Not unlike a certain indie comic industry in a certain Land of the Rising Sun... more on that later. So I started down the path of creating a comic, with no experience whatsoever. I figured it would be a learning process, and it was. I was working in tandem with ~ZaxZero, who would blow me away time and time again with his coloring work. But it kind of petered out... Zach had other life obligations, and I realized that I needed to stick to stuff that I could market for myself, not a video game fan work. So I kinda let it die. I felt sad letting down all you guys who had taken such an interest in it, but such is life.
A lot has changed since then. I've expanded a lot as an artist, and I've learned a lot more about comics, business, and storytelling in general. I've been reading some Comic Party lately... great manga, all about indie comics in Japan, or doujin. Really fun stuff, it's helped to motivate me a lot to work on my own original graphic novel series, The Twelve. But as I talked to ~cyclos12, it occurred to me that maybe I could give a more doujin-influenced approach to Super Mario Legend.
So, here's the good part. I want to finish this comic. But I don't want to do it at the expense of my work that could actually help me establish a career as a graphic artist... that's irresponsible. So, I need to have something to show for doing this. I was asking for $10 a page at the beginning of the summer, when I was in uber-rush-mode to try to raise enough money for a DSi. Cyclos12 took me up on the offer and asked for 5 pages, which I was ecstatic about... however, I was a bit let down that that was all I got to do, as there weren't any other takers. So, I'm willing to lower the price per page to coax some more fans of Super Mario RPG to help me get going... maybe even offer a bulk discount rate, if you choose to do, say, 5 pages or 10 or more pages (or, heaven forbid, an entire chapter).
See, the thing is, I have a lot of material for this comic. Cyclos12 asked me about how long I was planning to make the comic... and really, I've written an adaption for the entire game, rendered epically into a deeper, more character-driven format.
Tons of character development - Mario's pressure to save the day, Peach's complacency as a princess, Mallow's insecurity and confusion from the revelation of his origin, Geno's growing attachment to the mortal denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom and sorrow over the eventuality of his departure, Bowser's pressure to... well, be the bad guy... tons of that. Oh, and there might be a bit of a romance arc between Mario and Peach... just maybe...
Bigtime expansion of the plot including new subplots in Land's End (Wario and Waluigi, anyone?), Booster Pass, and Yo'ster Isle
Crazy-deep exploration of staple themes in the Mario universe like the Star Road, the nature of wishes, the geography of the Mushroom Kingdom... even how mushrooms and fireflowers work.
I wish I had the time to give to it, but since it's not a 100% original work that I can market in retail, I'm leaving it to the interest of fans of the series to propel it to completion. That's where the doujin part comes in. I'm basically considering this an indie fan comic at this point, and I'll produce it similarly to how it would be treated as a fan comic at a Japanese comipa - just not printed. The only profit I'll see from it is what you guys and girls, the fans of the game and its legacy, are willing to contribute to the cause of getting this comic produced, and that'll be it. Just imagine, an entire graphic novel saga created by the fans, for the fans... I wonder if it can be done. I'm excited to see how it works out.
So, that's that. I want to pick up this comic again, and I'm going to give this pay-per-pages thing another try, but experimenting with a more open-ended, small-scale system to get things moving faster. If nobody chips in, I'll have to move on and leave it unfinished, and everyone will be sad.
But honestly, I'm dying to finish this comic. I have some seriously epic stuff in mind! I'd like to hear some feedback, if anyone has any... Heck, even a "cool" if you like the idea of seeing more of the comic, and also your thoughts on the idea of contributing even small amounts to help get the ball rolling. I haven't decided on how much to ask, so that's something I open to suggestions for. How much would you be willing to pay to push it forward just a little bit? What about to see the whole book(s) done? (because trust me, it's huge... and awesome.)

If wishes were horses, beggars would ride
If leaders feed beggars, a nation of beggars will fight
Great work on the Mario Comic!
